We do less here than most sites. Revscale Media is funded by newsletter subscribers and advertising, not by selling reader data. This page explains what we do and don't collect, and how to opt out of anything you'd prefer we didn't do.
What we collect
Server logs
Our web server records standard request logs: the URL requested, your IP address, your user agent, the time of the request, and the page that referred you. We keep these logs for 30 days to diagnose problems, then we discard them. We do not use these logs to profile readers.
Browser storage
When you tap "Save" on an article, we store the article's slug in your browser's localStorage under the key rm.saved. This list never leaves your device. It's readable by any script on revscalemedia.com — including our own — but is not transmitted to our servers.
We also use localStorage briefly to remember the accent/paper/density preferences if you ever adjust them. Clearing your browser's site data for revscalemedia.com removes all of the above.
We do not use third-party analytics cookies. We do not use behavioral advertising cookies. We do not use tracking pixels.
Newsletters
When you subscribe to one of our newsletters, we ask for your email address. We send newsletter issues via an email service provider. That provider records standard delivery metadata (opens, clicks) so we can tell which stories readers engage with. We use this in aggregate to improve the product; we don't attempt to tie it back to individuals beyond removing bouncing addresses.
You can unsubscribe from any newsletter in one click using the link at the bottom of every issue. We honor unsubscribes immediately.
Tips
When you contact us via the tip line, we keep what you send us. If you use Signal, we follow the platform's disappearing-message defaults unless an ongoing story requires us to retain the conversation. If you mail us something physical, we keep the document and shred the envelope. We protect source material consistent with our ethics policy.
Advertising
Our advertising is contextual (based on the story's topic) and non-personalized. Advertisers do not receive individual reader data from us. Where an advertiser requests audience-level reporting, we provide aggregate counts only.
What we do with it
We use the data above to:
- Operate and secure the site (server logs).
- Deliver newsletters you requested (email address + bounce metadata).
- Respond to tips, corrections, and questions you send us.
- Report aggregate audience numbers to advertisers and sponsors.
We do not sell personal data. We do not share it with third parties except (a) service providers acting on our behalf under confidentiality agreements (e.g., our email vendor), or (b) as required by law.
Your rights
You can:
- Access or delete your newsletter subscription by emailing privacy@revscalemedia.com. We respond within 30 days.
- Unsubscribe from newsletters using the link in any issue.
- Clear your saved articles by clearing
rm.savedfrom your browser's site data, or by tapping "Save" again on each article. - Opt out of analytics — we don't use third-party analytics cookies, so there's nothing to opt out of. Your Do-Not-Track header is respected on the minor server-side counts we do keep.
If you are in California, the EU, or another jurisdiction with specific data-protection laws (GDPR, CCPA), you have additional rights under those laws — including the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. Contact privacy@revscalemedia.com to exercise them.
Children
Revscale Media is written for a professional adult audience. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 16. If we learn we've done so, we delete it.
Security
We use industry-standard measures to protect data we hold. No system is ever completely secure. If you are sending sensitive material, please use Signal rather than email — see the tip line.
Changes to this policy
We may revise this policy. Material changes are noted at the top of this page with an updated date. Previous versions are available on request.
